Job Description

Role Purpose

Egis Engineering Ireland is seeking to appoint a Senior Environmental Consultant to join our expanding Planning and Environmental team.

The Senior EIA Coordinator / Senior Environmental Specialist will lead and coordinate the environmental assessment process for complex infrastructure and development projects. The role focuses on ensuring the technical quality, consistency, and robustness of Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIARs) and associated environmental documentation, while working closely with planning, design, and specialist teams.

This is a senior technical role with responsibility for environmental integration, risk management, and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities

We are interested in hearing from passionate and proactive professionals who can demonstrate experience in the following areas:

  • Act as EIA Coordinator for multi-disciplinary projects, overseeing preparation of EIARs and related environmental assessments.
  • Coordinate environmental specialists (ecology, water, noise, air, traffic, etc.), ensuring timely inputs and consistency across chapters.
  • Review EIAR chapters for technical quality, completeness, and compliance with EIA legislation and guidance.
  • Ensure correct application of the mitigation hierarchy and integration of mitigation into project design.
  • Lead environmental risk identification and resolution throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Provide expert input on environmental topics including water, soils, biodiversity, climate, waste, and human health.
  • Review baseline data, impact assessments, and significance conclusions for technical robustness.
  • Ensure appropriate consideration of Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, Water Framework Directive, and EIA Directive requirements.
  • Oversee preparation and review of Natura Impact Statements (NIS) and AA screening documentation.
  • Support preparation of environmental management measures, CEMP inputs, and monitoring proposals.
  • Work closely with planning colleagues to align environmental assessments with planning strategy and submission requirements.
  • Liaise with clients, statutory bodies, and internal teams on environmental matters.
  • Support responses to statutory queries, RFIs, and public submissions.
  • Contribute to early-stage constraints mapping and environmental inputs to option selection and design development.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum of a Level 8 or Level 9 qualification (or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 7–10 years’ experience in environmental consultancy or infrastructure projects.
  • Proven experience coordinating EIARs and managing multi-disciplinary environmental inputs.
  • Strong understanding of Irish and EU environmental legislation and guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to critically review technical reports and environmental data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience acting as Lead EIA Coordinator on large infrastructure projects..
  • Prior involvement in the design and consenting process for large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience leading public consultation and stakeholder engagement activities.
  • Membership of a professional body (e.g. IES, Engineers Ireland, CIEEM).
  • Strong interest in sustainability, climate adaptation and environmental policy development.
