Head of Security
Job Description
The Head of Security is responsible for safeguarding An Post’s people, customers, assets, information, operations, facilities and brand through a comprehensive, enterprise‑aligned physical security strategy. This senior leadership role sets the strategic direction for security governance, crime prevention, intelligence‑led risk mitigation, technological evolution, and disciplined compliance with legal and regulatory obligations.
As Head of Security, you will develop and lead a modern, integrated security function capable of preventing and responding to threats, minimising loss, strengthening organisational resilience, and enhancing customer and stakeholder confidence. As an evolving role, it requires strategic insight, enterprise leadership, and the ability to influence across the organisation and with external partners.
Responsibilities
The principal accountabilities associated with this role include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Enterprise Security Strategy & Governance: Develop and lead the organisation-wide physical security strategy, aligned with corporate priorities and emerging threats.
- Fraud Strategy, Prevention & Loss Mitigation: Establish and lead the enterprise-wide fraud strategy, strengthening governance, internal controls, policy implementation and prevention frameworks to proactively detect, investigate, and recover losses. Deploy intelligence-led approaches to address emerging internal and external fraud risks, minimise financial and operational impact, and provide clear oversight and assurance to the Board. Co-chair the Fraud & Cyber Forum, ensuring integration with the organisation’s broader governance and risk management structures.
- Cyber-Physical Security Integration: Partner with Information Security/CDTO to deliver a cyber-physical convergence roadmap.
- Security Technology Leadership: Oversee CCTV, access control, alarms, IoT devices, incident management platforms, and monitoring systems.
- Crisis Management & Resilience: Lead crisis management, emergency response, and major incident protocols with clear command and decision structures.
- Regulatory & Compliance Oversight: Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, and protective security frameworks, including third-party and contractor standards.
- Intelligence & Performance Management: Maintain security KPIs, insights and dashboards, reporting to Executive Team and Board, supporting proactive threat identification.
- People Leadership & Capability Development: Inspire and lead a multidisciplinary team, driving performance, accountability, and long-term workforce planning.
- External Relations & Multi-Agency Cooperation: Build partnerships with law enforcement, regulatory bodies, and industry networks, coordinating responses to major or national threats.
- Digital Capability: Demonstrate digital savviness and commitment to continuously enhancing technology-driven security operations.
- Demonstrate An Post values and behaviours in your day-to-day work and addressing behaviour that supports/conflicts with them.
Qualifications
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
A minimum of 10 years’ senior leadership experience in security management, law enforcement, risk management, or a related field is required, supported by a third-level qualification in a relevant discipline.
Demonstrated success leading large-scale investigations, managing major incidents, and delivering enterprise-wide risk mitigation programmes is essential.
Extensive expertise in physical security technologies, crime prevention strategies, and organisational resilience, with a track record of implementing best-in-class, contemporary solutions.
Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, drive strategic change, and influence senior stakeholders to achieve organisational objectives.
Strong knowledge of regulatory, legal, and compliance frameworks relevant to security operations, with demonstrable experience developing KPIs, establishing reporting frameworks, and presenting at Executive and Board level is essential.
Accredited training or qualifications in security risk management, protective security standards, or intelligence analysis would be advantageous.
Experience operating within a large, complex, unionised organisation and/or a national critical infrastructure environment would be beneficial, though not essential.
This role will be based in the An Post HQ EXO building; however nationwide travel will be required.
