The Role
The Engineering Manager – Mechanical & Electrical, is responsible for the strategic management, performance, resilience and lifecycle optimisation of Dublin Port Company’s mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation assets. The role ensures that M&E assets support safe, reliable, compliant and efficient port operations, while aligning with DPC’s long‑term capital investment plans, sustainability objectives and regulatory obligations. The role will provide leadership to support and develop the technical teams while translating business needs into robust asset strategies and investment plans. The role is accountable for ensuring the reliability and availability of critical port infrastructure, including oil and gas marine importation equipment, firefighting systems, ro-ro ramps, marine vessels, navigational aids, EC&I systems, emergency back-up systems, while meeting the operational needs of port users. Operating across a 260‑hectare port estate and a further 44‑hectare inland site, the Engineering Manager -Mechanical & Electrical is responsible for safeguarding essential assets and support the smooth functioning of Ireland’s largest port.
Purpose
- Provide strategic leadership across the Engineering & Sustainability function, guiding the implementation of the organisation’s asset management strategy for mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation assets.
- Act as a key member of the Engineering & Sustainability leadership team, contributing to decision‑making and deputising for the Head of Function when required.
- Be a trusted leader within the Engineering function, actively contributing to the delivery of the organisation’s people strategy and fostering a high‑performance, inclusive culture.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Asset Management & Lifecycle Planning
- Own and develop asset management strategies and plans for all M&E assets, including condition, criticality, renewals, obsolescence, and reliability.
- Drive the control, monitoring, and optimisation of operational and maintenance costs, risks, and performance across the full M&E asset lifecycle.
- Work closely with the Maintenance Planning Engineer to ensure all available asset data is acquired, develop reports to provide clear, reliable cost and performance information that strengthens asset data management to support annual expense and capital budget planning.
- Develop and maintain medium‑ and long‑term asset investment plans aligned with port development, decarbonisation and resilience objectives. Act as project sponsor for M&E elements of capital projects, renewals and major upgrades from inception through to handover.
- Support preparation for new assets under Dublin Ports’ Masterplan 2040 by coordinating asset readiness activities, ensuring operational requirements, documentation, and standards are fully met. Work closely with the Project Management Office (PMO) throughout the entire project life cycle, ensuring asset management requirements are captured within project briefs ensuring high quality project handover.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with key port stakeholders to support safe, efficient operations, long‑term planning, and sustainable development.
Leadership, People & Capability Management
- Lead, manage and develop a multidisciplinary M&E team in a safe, inclusive and effective manner.
- Set clear objectives, embed a strong safety culture, support competency development, and ensure appropriate resourcing to deliver asset strategies and capital programmes.
- Work closely with the Head of Function to shape and deliver people focused strategies that strengthen team capability, resilience, and alignment.
Standards, Compliance & Governance
- Ensure M&E assets are fit for purpose, safe, reliable and available to meet operational requirements.
- Identify and manage asset‑related risks, including failure, energy resilience, and ageing infrastructure.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, assurance processes and kpi’s for M&E assets.
- Ensure compliance with statutory, regulatory, safety, environmental and energy requirements.
- Provide relevant subject matter expertise, as needed, and promote asset management policies and standards.
Qualifications and Experience
Mandatory
- A relevant 3rd level engineering qualification
- 8-10 years engineering or asset management experience in a heavy industrial work environment
- Understanding of relevant European and National H&S legislation
- Experience developing lifecycle strategies, renewal and obsolescence plans, long‑term capital investment programmes
- Experience supporting or overseeing procurement strategies, technical tender evaluations and contract performance
- Proven experience leading, motivating and developing technical teams
- Track record of building safe systems of work, strong engineering culture and effective, accountable teams
- Excellent influencing, relationship building, interpersonal and communications skills.
Desirable
- Formal training or certification in Asset Management Qualification
- Membership of an Asset Management Institution is desired but not essential.
- Chartership with Engineers Ireland or seeking Chartership with Engineers Ireland is desired but not essential.
- Familiarity with CMMS/EAM tools (e.g.,Pemac, Maximo, SAP PM).
- Experience in maritime, oil and gas, or heavy industrial environments
- Familiarity with contractor management & permit to work systems
