This position will be based in Killarney Co Kerry with our Wildlife Unit based in Killarney. We are looking for someone who is open to travelling all over Ireland when required for surveying and client meetings. You must be comfortable to be part of a fast working environment and be able to use your own initiative
Core Responsibilities
Field Surveys & Monitoring: Conduct multidisciplinary walkover surveys to identify and record Irish flora and fauna & invasive plant species. This includes specialized surveys for protected species such as deer, badgers, bats and breeding birds.
Ecological Reporting: Prepare high-quality technical documents, specifically Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA), Appropriate Assessment (AA) Screening, and Natura Impact Statements (NIS).
Legislative Compliance: Provide expert advice on the Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, and the Wildlife Acts to ensure projects meet Irish and EU regulatory standards.
Mapping & Data Analysis: Use GIS (Geographical Information Systems) software like QGIS or ArcGIS to map habitats (often using the Fossitt classification system) and analyse spatial biological data.
Client Liaison: Consult with local authorities, landowners, and government bodies like NPWS, DAFM, OPW.
A strong ability to work out on the field with treating invasive plant species as part of the wider Wildlife management team
Required Qualifications & Skills
Education: A minimum of a Level 8 BSc (Hons) in Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
Species Identification: Strong proficiency in identifying Irish species by sight and sound, particularly avian or botanical species. Invasive plant species identification such as Rhododendron, Cotoneaster, Cherry Laurel.
Field Competency: Physical fitness for working in remote locations and diverse weather conditions.
Practical Certifications: A full Irish driving licence is essential.
Professional Membership: Eligibility for membership in professional bodies like the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) is often requested.
