About SEMO
Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) is a contractual joint venture between EirGrid plc and SONI Ltd, responsible for operating the Single Electricity Market (SEM) across the island of Ireland. SEMO ensures the efficient, transparent, and compliant functioning of market operations, settlement, and governance in line with regulatory obligations and market codes. The SEMO business is governed by the SEMO Governing Committee which is jointly executed by EirGrid plc & SONI Ltd.

The Opportunity
We are seeking a dynamic SEMO General Manager to lead the SEMO business. In this role, you will provide strategic leadership to ensure SEMO delivers its objectives in full compliance with license & regulatory obligations, safeguarding the integrity of the Single Electricity Market. You will hold overall responsibility for the effective operation of all core market functions, ensuring timely and accurate market operations and settlements.
You will lead the SEMO business, reporting to the SEMO Governing Committee, and ensuring that critical issues are escalated and managed promptly. You will oversee daily operational decision‑making and maintain alignment across SEMO teams while engaging proactively with market participants, regulators, policy makers and internal stakeholders. You will represent SEMO at regulatory consultations, industry forums and at a European level, fostering constructive and trusted relationships across the energy sector.
You will direct financial and resource management, ensuring budgetary alignment with Price Control requirements and leading capability planning across SEMO. With a strong emphasis on risk and compliance, you will maintain robust frameworks, oversee audits and implement corrective actions as needed. Leading teams of subject matter experts, you will promote continuous improvement and knowledge development. You also will champion change, driving digitalisation, process optimisation and transformation initiatives to ensure SEMO’s current and future needs.

Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Leadership: Provides strategic leadership to define and deliver SEMO’s objectives in alignment with Market Operator obligations and regulatory requirements, safeguarding the integrity of the Single Electricity Market for all consumers on the island of Ireland.
- Operational Oversight: Directs the end-to-end oversight of the operational management of SEMO’s core functions—Market Operations, Market Settlement, Stakeholder Engagement, and Market Registration & Compliance—ensuring accurate and timely delivery of market operations and settlements.
- Governance & Reporting: Leads governance and oversight, chairing the SEMO Operational Committee and ensuring robust governance structures are in place. Regular reporting to the SEMO Governing Committee and timely escalation of critical issues will be central to your role
- Technical Counsel: Act as the first point of escalation for SEM-related matters and will provide technical leadership, counsel and support to the SEMO management team seeking to resolve operational issues in a timely manner.
- Finance & Resource Management You will take ownership of financial and resource management, oversee SEMO budgets and ensuring alignment with Price Control allocations. Leading resource planning and capability development across SEMO teams will be key to maintaining operational excellence.
- Risk & Compliance: Maintains a strong focus on risk and compliance, ensuring robust frameworks are in place, overseeing audits, and implementing corrective actions where required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
- Significant experience in a leadership role in the electricity industry or adjacent industry, with extensive knowledge of market operations.
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field
- Experience of creating, leading and influencing high performing teams in changing circumstances
- Exceptional relationship management skills including significant service management, customer management and engagement experience.
- Strong experience in analysing numerical data and statistics with excellent attention to detail
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, decision-making and presentation skills
- Exceptional at identifying and mitigating risks
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances, demonstrate resilience and be comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity
