The Role

As an O&M Field Technician, you will be based at our water and wastewater treatment sites with assigned ownership of certain water and wastewater treatment plants. You will be responsible for ensuring the quality and quantity of treated water or final effluent produced is within specification, and that each assigned site, its facilities, grounds, contents and individual processes are operated and maintained to the highest standards.

You will be allocated responsibility and ownership for your dedicated water or wastewater treatment plants and will ensure appropriate coverage is maintained by other O&M Department team members during scheduled and unscheduled leave or days off. You will work on a rota system, which will be managed by office staff, and will share out-of-hours and public holiday cover with the site team.

The use of email, apps, laptops, SCADA systems and HMI platforms is essential and is considered a critical business tool in day-to-day O&M activities. You will be expected to support the commissioning team in the daily operation and maintenance of live operational projects whilst demonstrating progression and development in your own career. You will be presented with a wide multidisciplinary engineering knowledge base and significant opportunity to progress your career within a growing organisation.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

The main duties and responsibilities of the O&M Technician are outlined as follows:


Operations & Maintenance

·       Take ownership and responsibility for allocated water and wastewater treatment plant facilities, ensuring standards of quality and cleanliness are always upheld.

·       Perform daily, weekly, monthly and other periodic operation and maintenance checks to ensure the quality and quantity of treated water or final effluent is within specification.

·       Conduct and record process adjustments and chemical dosing (e.g. chlorine for disinfection) to ensure treated water and wastewater outputs are to the required standard.

·       Monitor filtration systems and biological breakdown processes in wastewater treatment systems.

·       Respond to critical alarms when required to ensure water and wastewater treatment output is maintained and maintained to specification.

·       Perform walkthrough inspections of the site, visually inspecting all areas of the plant and treatment process, and recording findings as outlined in the Site Reporting App for each applicable plant.

·       Conduct testing and lab work routinely testing water samples for pH, turbidity and bacterial content to ensure regulatory compliance.

·       Carry out service of dosing pumps and calibration of analytical equipment as required.

·       Perform maintenance and troubleshooting of gauges, meters and associated monitoring equipment.

·       Perform mechanical and electrical repairs to plant equipment and systems as required.

·       Complete grounds maintenance activities including grass cutting, facility cleaning and general site upkeep.

·       Work closely with the commissioning team whilst carrying out SAT testing on the HMI/PLC systems, gaining an understanding of plant operations before systems go live.

·       Log into SCADA systems remotely to monitor plant operations and respond to alerts as required.

·       Complete and maintain comprehensive records of all maintenance, testing and operational activities.


Health, Safety & Compliance

·       Ensure all assigned water and wastewater treatment plants comply with applicable health, safety and environmental regulations.

·       Always carry a lone working device and use it in accordance with the specific operating procedure, as the majority of day-to-day duties involve working alone.

·       Conduct a HSQE walkthrough of each water and wastewater treatment plant on a weekly basis and complete and submit the Weekly HSQE Checklist for Operations.

·       Promote a strong safety culture at all sites, embedding health and safety considerations into all operational and maintenance activities.

·       Support internal training and external bodies in operations team health and safety standards.

·       Report on any health and safety concerns or near-misses in accordance with Glanua's safety procedures.

·       Comply with all relevant company policies, procedures and statutory requirements at all times.


Reporting & Site Management

·       Visit each assigned site on a regular basis in accordance with the maintenance schedule and operational requirements.

·       Complete a site visit report on the Site Reporting App for each visit to the plant, recording all relevant findings and activities.

·       Prepare and submit weekly, monthly and other periodic reporting as required by site management and Glanua.

·       Maintain and update comprehensive site records, including maintenance logs, test results, equipment service records and compliance documentation.

·       Escalate any concerns relating to plant performance, equipment condition or operational issues to Site Operations Manager or senior management as appropriate.

·       Ensure all documentation and records are maintained in accordance with Glanua's governance and compliance requirements.


Flexibility & Development

·       Work flexibly in accordance with the weekly rota system, the role will start Monday to Friday for the first couple of months with hours varying across the week (Monday to Sunday) and including varied start and finish times as required.

·       Undertake out-of-hours and weekend work as required by the operational rota.

·       Show eagerness to learn and progress your own career within the water and wastewater sector.

·       Contribute to the mentoring and training of more junior O&M staff members.

·       Support the broader O&M and commissioning teams on special projects and operational initiatives.

·       Actively seek opportunities to develop technical skills and expand knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes.

·       Undertake other duties as required from time to time to support the O&M function.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience

The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the O&M Technician are outlined as follows:

·       Experience in Water and/or Wastewater Plant operations is desirable.

·       Mechanical or electrical background with some process experience is desirable; this is a hands-on role.

·       An interest in developing a career within an industry-leading water and wastewater treatment organisation.

·       Ability to work effectively as part of a team, including in project delivery and team meetings.

·       Ability to engage with suppliers and subcontractors at the procurement stage and during delivery of their scope of supply.

·       Ability to use own initiative, problem solve and adjust as issues arise during O&M activities.

·       Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

·       Competency in using SCADA systems, HMI platforms and standard business software.

·       Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a high level of motivation.

·       Full driving licence (essential).

·       Willingness to work flexibly including out-of-hours, weekend and on-call shifts as required.

·       Good time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.

·       Ability to work safely in the field and maintain high standards of personal hygiene and health and safety.
