Job Title: Systems Administrator

Reporting to: Head of IT Department

Location: Griffith College Limerick

Job Type:  Full-Time / Fixed-Term (12 months contract)



Job Summary:


We’re looking for people who want to work in an environment that will challenge you but will also provide the support you need to meet those challenges. This is a hand‑on systems administration role with strong scope for personal growth and technical development.

This is a hybrid role primarily based in Limerick. You will:

  • Be supported and mentored by our senior IT team in Dublin and Cork.
  • Be involved in planning and implementing changes and improvements to all areas of technology on your campus.
  • Be encouraged to grow your own skills while improving the services we offer to staff and learners.
  • Work closely with the wider IT team, sharing ideas and knowledge across:
    • Desktop and hardware support
    • Security
    • Linux and Windows administration
    • Networking and infrastructure
    • Telephony and A/V

This role offers both autonomy, mastery, and purpose, with strong mentoring from senior staff as you develop.


Job Responsibilities:

 

You will be responsible for service desk support and systems administration for all IT requirements of the College on the Limerick campus.

The role is part of the College's IT Services team, and while your primary responsibility is the Limerick campus, you will also:

  • Provide remote support to all campuses via the main IT phone lines and central ticketing queues.
  • Work closely with senior system administrators and colleagues in Dublin and Cork.
  • Contribute to shared projects, standards and documentation across all locations.

 

 Typical responsibilities include Directory & cloud services

 

  • Administration of Active Directory, Group Policies, Microsoft 365, SharePoint
  • Management of MS DHCP & DNS, terminal services/remote access


Servers, networking & infrastructure 

  • Maintenance of the physical network environment:
    • Servers, switches, routers, firewalls, racks, patch panels, etc.
    • Configuration and deployment of servers and desktops
  • Development and maintenance of data/service availability systems:
    • Backup and failover systems
    • Disaster recovery planning and testing

 

Security & patching

  • Application of security updates and patches to servers and clients as required
  • Assisting in maintaining secure configurations and responding to security incidents


Desktop, classroom & enduser support

  • Resolving operational problems relating to: o Servers, PCs, printers, data communications and application software
  • Maintenance of classroom A/V equipment:
    • PCs, projectors, control systems (Extron, Crestron, etc.)
    • Printer installation, troubleshooting and maintenance
    • Administration and maintenance of the telephone system


Monitoring, scripting & documentation 

  • Monitoring and measuring operational performance (e.g. Graylog, Netdata, Nagios)
  • Maintenance and development of in‑house scripts (e.g. PowerShell)
  • Documenting tasks, policies and SOPs
  • Preparing operational reports as required

 

Working environment

You will work with:

  • Servers - Windows and Linux
  • Client devices – Windows laptops and desktop computers
  • Network & security
  • Cisco switches
  • Fortinet firewalls
  • Classroom A/V, Panasonic projectors, Crestron control equipment
  • Printers

 

Required skills & experience

A suitable candidate will have at least 2+ years’ experience in most of the following technologies:

  • Microsoft & desktop
  • MS Windows desktops and servers
  • Active Directory & Group Policy
  • WSUS
  • Printer maintenance
  • Networking
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP
  • Experience with MS DNS & DHCP administration
  • Basic switch configuration
  • Wi‑Fi configuration

  • Demonstrate strong attention to detail


Desirable (but not essential) skills 

Knowledge of any of the following would be beneficial, but is not required:

  • Moodle VLE
  • ITIL v3 or v4 certification
  • Linux (Postfix, Bind, Apache etc.)
  • Scripting (any of PHP, Perl, Python, Bash, VB, PowerShell etc.)
  • Firewalls
  • macOS (OSX)
  • Backup solutions (Bacula or other enterprise‑scale systems)
  • Systems management / monitoring (Nagios, Graylog, Grafana)


Training and development 

Candidates who do not yet meet all of the technical requirements may still be considered. The College can support up‑skilling through:

  • Microsoft Learning Pathways
  • CCNA
  • LPIC
  • CompTIA
  • LinkedIn Learning

There is a strong emphasis on cross‑training within the department to transfer skills and knowledge. Less‑experienced candidates will be mentored closely by our senior administrators to quickly develop their skill sets.
