General responsibilities and scope of the role

The Commissioning Quality Engineer will support the commissioning department by making sure commissioning activities are clearly defined, planned properly, and delivered in line with company and client standards. The role focuses on reviewing documentation, confirming scope, preparing commissioning ITPs, and ensuring the process from FAT through to energisation is followed.

A key part of this position is setting projects up for success before mobilisation. This involves working as part of a team during early engagement with tendering, design, and commissioning to capture commissioning requirements, clarify scope, and ensure the correct documentation is in place before work reaches site. The goal is to identify issues early and reduce programme delays, rework, and uncertainty during commissioning.

Specific responsibilities

· Review contracts, employer’s requirements, divisional responsibility documents, and related project documentation to confirm commissioning scope.

· Work with design and commissioning engineers to compile commissioning ITPs and supporting documents.

· Review drawings, schematics, and design information to ensure all commissioning requirements are captured early.

· Make sure commissioning processes from FAT to energisation are defined, documented, and tracked.

· Coordinate with the commissioning planner so commissioning input is reflected in the project programme.

· Identify unclear or missing documentation and work with the project team to close gaps.

· Support the continuous improvement of commissioning standards and processes across the department.

· Prepare updates and commissioning delivery models for internal reviews or management meetings.

Skills and requirements

· Strong knowledge of HV and MV substation equipment, protection systems, and commissioning activities.

· Experience with commissioning processes from FAT through to energisation. Ability to review and interpret technical documentation, drawings, schematics, contracts, and scope documents.

· Good communication skills and able to work with multiple teams (design, planning, tendering, commissioning, project management).

· Competent with Microsoft tools such as Excel, Word, and Outlook, and able to work with planning or document management systems.

· Able to organise workload, manage tasks independently, and meet deadlines.

· Good attention to detail with a practical approach to problem solving.
