About the role:
The SCADA Specialist will be reporting directly to the group SCADA commissioning specialist and will act as a key technical authority for substation SCADA and Substation Automation Systems (SAS) across H&MV Engineering projects. This role supports the full project lifecycle—from early design review and FAT through site commissioning, energisation, and handover—ensuring robust, standards compliant supervisory control and monitoring of HV and MV substations. The position works closely with Protection, Control, Design, Telecoms, Commissioning, and Cyber Security teams, bridging disciplines to ensure consistent, reliable, and repeatable SCADA delivery across the business. This role is well suited to an engineer who wants to remain technically hands on while influencing standards, quality, and best practice across projects.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery & Engineering
• Act as the technical point of contact for substation SCADA, RTU, gateway, and HMI systems, ensuring correct integration with protection, control, and primary plant.
• Validate SCADA and SAS solutions, including IEC 61850 station bus integration, control, indication, alarms, SOE, and reporting.
• Review and support development of SCADA architectures, I/O lists, point mapping, control philosophies, and communication designs.
• Ensure alignment with grid codes, project specifications, and internal standards. FAT, SAT & Commissioning Support
• Lead and support FAT, SAT, and site commissioning activities for SCADA, RTUs, and communication networks.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex SCADA, communications, and interface issues during commissioning and post energisation.
• Support energisation activities and contribute to declarations of fitness and system handover. Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
• Work closely with Protection, Design, Commissioning, Telecoms, and Project teams to ensure coordinated delivery.
• Interface with clients, OEMs, and control center operators to resolve technical queries and support integration requirements.
• Attend project kick off, coordination meetings, and FATs as required. Standards, Quality & Continuous Improvement
• Support the development and rollout of standardised SCADA architectures, templates, and testing approaches across the group.
• Ensure compliance with relevant IEC standards (IEC 61850, IEC 60870 5 104, DNP3, Modbus) and applicable cyber security requirements.
• Contribute to lessons learned, technical documentation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to commissioning and engineering teams as required.
Skills / Experience (Typical)
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent practical experience in power systems and substation automation.
• 5 years + relevant experience in SCADA engineering and a proven experience delivering SCADA and SAS solutions on HV/MV substation projects.
• Strong working knowledge of IEC 61850 based substation automation and modern digital substation concepts.
• Experience with RTUs, gateways, HMIs, and SCADA integration to control centers.
• Confident communicator with a structured, safety driven approach to delivery.
