Job summary

This is an appointment to the HSE West & North West Region on a Public Only Consultants’ Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Galway for 15 hours per week and HSE West & North West Region for 22 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE’s National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

Geriatric Medicine in Galway is provided at University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital. Older people in the catchment area also attend Portiuncula and Roscommon University Hospitals for geriatric care.

Geriatric Medicine has been allocated 9.5 WTEs (7.5 filled at present) at Galway University Hospitals (These posts are located throughout University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park University Hospital/HSE Bons Secours Frailty Unit, PUH and HSE West & North West Region Integrated Care). The department has a strong academic ethos with 3 academic posts focusing on neurovascular medicine, geriatric medicine and integrated care. There has been considerable development in geriatric services over the last number of years including development of Frailty at the Front Door and Acute Frailty/Geriatric Medicine, Stroke, Orthogeriatrics and Falls, Rehabilitation and Integrated Care services that span the spectrum of care from the acute hospital right out to the community for older people in this region. There is also ongoing development of Regional Specialist Memory service in the area aligned with the National Dementia strategy which will have a geriatrician post and this will be a key collaboration for the post holder as it is envisioned that the integrated care service and memory support services will work closely together particularly in the post diagnostic support piece.

Information about the organisation

The purpose of the post is to provide an integrated Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine service between GUH and CHW and to play a key role in liaison with and development of frailty at the front door services in conjunction with acute colleagues as well as maintaining and further developing community outreach clinics which are linked to the Specialist Ambulatory Hub for older people.
