Cities & Places

At Jacobs, we're challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world's most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission-critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting-edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Your impact

You are a Senior Traffic or Transportation professional who is passionate about shaping better streets, healthier cities and more sustainable travel choices. You thrive in complex urban environments, enjoy working at the intersection of policy, design and delivery, and are comfortable leading both people and projects.

You bring credibility with clients, confidence in multidisciplinary settings, and a collaborative leadership style that brings the best out of teams. From early concept through to delivery, you enjoy turning vision into reality — whether that’s reallocating roadspace, delivering active travel schemes, or helping cities respond to evolving mobility, climate and placemaking agendas.

You are motivated by influence and impact: contributing strategic insight, mentoring others, growing client relationships and helping to shape the future direction of a leading streets and transport practice across Ireland.

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an Associate Director of Traffic Engineering to join our Active Travel & Urban Transport team. This role can be based in Dublin, Cork or Belfast, working on a hybrid basis between office, home and client locations.

You will play a key leadership role in shaping and delivering projects focused on urban streets, active travel, placemaking and sustainable transport, operating at a senior level with clients, stakeholders and multidisciplinary teams across multiple geographies. The role offers the opportunity to influence strategy, guide delivery, mentor teams and help grow a high‑performing and progressive practice.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading the development and delivery of urban traffic engineering and active travel projects from early concept and option development through to detailed design, procurement and delivery support
  • Providing strategic, evidence‑based advice to clients within complex policy, funding and governance environments
  • Acting as a trusted senior adviser, building strong client relationships and representing Jacobs in meetings, workshops and public forums
  • Providing technical direction and quality assurance across multidisciplinary teams
  • Supporting business growth through client development, bidding and market positioning
  • Mentoring and developing staff, fostering an inclusive, collaborative and high‑performance culture
Here's what you'll need
  • Degree‑qualified (or equivalent) in a relevant engineering or transport‑related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional qualification (e.g. Engineers Ireland, CIHT, CEng, TPP), or the experience and professional standing to demonstrate equivalence
  • Extensive experience in traffic engineering, with a strong track record in urban streets, active travel, placemaking and/or complete streets projects
  • In‑depth knowledge of Irish standards and guidance, including DMURS, the National Cycle Manual, the Capital Works Management Framework and the NTA Project Appraisal Guidelines, along with familiarity with relevant TII standards and sustainable transport policy
  • Proven experience leading projects through all delivery stages, from concept to implementation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience leading reports, presentations and stakeholder workshops
  • Demonstrated leadership in project, client and commercial management, including responsibility for programme, resources, financial performance and quality assurance
  • Experience managing and mentoring teams, providing technical leadership and supporting career progression
  • Ability and ambition to contribute to business growth through client relationship management, bid development and market leadership
  • A commitment to thought leadership, knowledge sharing and shaping the future direction of the Streets and Active Travel practice
