Job Description
The Operations Manager is accountable for the end‑to‑end performance of warehouse operations, delivering a safe, efficient, and cost‑effective service within a high‑volume, time‑critical retail distribution environment. The role holds responsibility for operational execution, people leadership, and customer performance, ensuring service levels consistently meet the expectations of a demanding retail customer.
The role is both inward‑facing and outward‑facing, requiring strong leadership of internal operational teams while acting as a senior operational interface with the customer and wider stakeholder groups. Leading by example, the Operations Manager promotes and embeds a culture where health & safety, hygiene, quality, and customer service are of the highest priority.
Key Responsibilities:
Inward‑Facing: People & Operations
- Provide leadership and direction to operational teams to deliver daily, weekly, and peak operational plans.
- Own labour planning, shift structures, productivity management, and operational cost control.
- Drive full compliance with health & safety standards and actively promote a strong safety culture across the operation.
- Manage performance through agreed KPIs, structured coaching, and regular performance reviews.
- Ensure accurate and consistent execution across inbound, outbound, inventory management, and replenishment activities.
- Champion continuous improvement, standard work, and operational discipline across all warehouse processes.
- Ensure effective and compliant use of WMS / SAP and internal operational systems.
Outward‑Facing: Customer & Stakeholder Management
- Act as a key operational contact for a high‑expectation retail customer.
- Translate customer demand, forecasts, and operational priorities into clear, executable plans.
- Lead operational discussions relating to service levels, capacity, constraints, and recovery actions.
- Manage operational escalations professionally, balancing service delivery, cost control, and operational risk.
- Represent operations in customer reviews, audits, and peak readiness planning forums.
- Work cross‑functionally with Transport, Inventory, IT, Finance, and HR to support end‑to‑end performance.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5+ years’ experience within logistics, warehouse, or distribution operations.
- Proven people‑management experience in a live, fast‑paced operational environment.
- Strong understanding of operational KPIs, labour planning, and cost control.
- Experience working with WMS / ERP systems, with SAP experience desirable.
- Ability to operate confidently at both detailed operational level and senior customer interface level.
- Strong communication, decision‑making, and problem‑solving capability.
