Summary of Post
Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects ~60 million people globally. It is characterised by recurrent unprovoked seizures. Current treatments rely almost exclusively on the use of antiseizure medications; however, these treatments fail to work in one third of people, leading to drug resistant epilepsy. It has been hypothesised that limited penetration across the blood-brain barrier may contribute to the development of drug resistance, but the mechanisms responsible for this are poorly understood. The aim of this fellowship is to use a combination of modelling approaches (in vitro and in vivo) to identify the molecular mechanisms behind drug resistant epilepsy, focussing on the role of the blood-brain barrier. Successful applicants will lead a defined project while also contributing to the objectives of the broader team, with opportunities to develop independent research initiatives and collaborate across disciplines.
Specifically, the duties of the post are:
Perform in vitro and in vivo experiments to investigate the mechanisms of drug resistance in epilepsy.
Develop in vitro models of drug resistant epilepsy using induced pluripotent stem cells.
Lead, prepare and publish scientific results in leading international peer-reviewed journals.
Assist in supervision of doctoral researchers in the group.
Presentation of research results at national and international scientific meetings.
Actively engage in personal career development, with support and mentorship provided for pursuing independent research fellowships and funding opportunities.
Qualifications – (Essential):
PhD in Cell Biology, Neuroscience or closely related discipline (Biochemistry, Genetics etc)
Knowledge & Experience – (Essential):
A proven track record of research excellence, supported by high-quality publications, and appropriate for the career stage.
Hands-on experience with core cell biology techniques: electrophysiology, molecular biology, cell/tissue culture.
Demonstrated experience with in vivo epilepsy models and electrophysiology
Experience with in vitro blood-brain barrier models and culturing induced pluripotent stem cells is highly desirable
Experience in bioinformatics and RNA-seq analysis is desirable
We are all too aware that imposter syndrome and the confidence gap can sometimes stop fantastic candidates putting themselves forward, so please do submit an application — we’d love to hear from you.
