Objectives of this post:
RCSI is committed to preparing future healthcare professionals to lead in an increasingly digital and AI-enabled healthcare system. Embedding AI and digital health competencies across undergraduate programmes is a strategic priority, reflecting the profound impact these technologies are having on clinical decision-making, research, patient engagement, and healthcare delivery.
The Teacher Practitioner will play a key translational role, bringing practical, real-world experience in applying AI and digital health solutions within healthcare contexts directly into the educational environment. This role ensures students gain both theoretical understanding and develop the applied skills required to evaluate, implement, and safely use emerging technologies in clinical practice.
By supporting curriculum development, mentoring faculty, and delivering experiential and practice-informed learning, the Teacher Practitioner will advance RCSI’s mission to develop digitally fluent, ethically grounded graduates capable of leading innovation in healthcare. The postholder will act as a catalyst for embedding digital health competencies across programmes, aligning with global standards and best practices in health professions education.
Objective of this post are to:
• Design, deliver and continuously improve undergraduate teaching that integrates AI concepts and digital health approaches with authentic clinical applications across healthcare disciplines including medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy and dentistry.
• Support faculty in developing their own AI and digital health-related competence, enabling them to deliver discipline-specific content.
• Collaborate with clinical and academic experts across RCSI to develop innovative, AI-enabled teaching approaches that strengthen application-focused learning..
Specific Responsibilities include:
Teaching:
• Develop and deliver foundational content and assessments on AI and digital health with a strong focus on real-world clinical or biomedical applications.
• Produce discipline-specific learning materials that demonstrate how AI and digital technologies are currently used, or can be responsibly adopted, in clinical workflows, diagnostics, therapeutics, health systems, and patient care.
• Ensure all teaching is innovative, research-informed, internationally benchmarked, and reflective of evolving healthcare practice, whilst demonstrating a student-centred approach to all duties to ensure optimal educational outcomes.
• Provide short-training sessions to academic faculty enabling them to deliver systems-specific AI and digital health content.
• Integrate ethical, explainable, and trustworthy AI principles relevant to biomedical research and clinical practice. Contribute to interdisciplinary teams designing healthcare-focused AI and digital health teaching initiatives.
• Develop, implement and evaluate new AI-assisted teaching and learning tools that enhance student engagement while improving efficiency.
Support the delivery of RCSI’s teaching, learning, assessment, and feedback strategy, including use of technology-enhanced learning.
Research:
• Contribute to practice-informed and education-focused research in AI and digital health, particularly in areas that enhance teaching, curriculum design, or student learning.
• Participate in collaborative academic or industry projects where appropriate, especially those that translate AI or digital health innovations into real-world educational or clinical settings.
• Support undergraduate and postgraduate research projects within the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences, with an emphasis on applied, implementation-focused or pedagogical topics related to digital health or AI in healthcare.
(This role supports research engagement but does not carry the expectations of a traditional research-intensive academic post)
Service
**:**
• Comply with statutory and institutional policies that ensure a safe and supportive environment for staff and students.
• Undertake academic administration and contribute to School and Faculty activities such as examination boards, meetings, outreach events, and Open Days.
• Engage with the RCSI AI and Digital Health Committee to support the strategic embedding of AI and digital health across education, research, and policy.
• Promote the best interests of RCSI at all times, enhancing the School’s reputation in education, research and public events.
• Support students through student-centred initiatives, such as personal tutoring/mentoring, and other initiatives, as appropriate.
• Build and maintain relationships with national and international partners in academia, healthcare, and industry.Perform such other duties as may be required from time to time.
Qualifications – (Essential):
• MSc or PhD (or equivalent) in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Health, Health Informatics, Biomedical Data Science, or a closely related field.
• Clear evidence of applied experience using advanced AI/ML methods or digital health technologies within healthcare, biomedical research, or life sciences environments.
Knowledge & Experience – (Essential):
• Demonstrable experience teaching undergraduate learners in AI, machine learning, data science, or digital health, specifically within health, biomedical, or life science contexts.
• A recognised teaching qualification is desirable.
• Evidence of effective teamwork and strong communication skills, particularly when working across disciplines.
• Requires minimum direction to effectively deliver on assigned functions, and demonstrates a positive, student–centred and solution focused approach to addressing challenges and ambiguity.
• Has flexibility to work irregular hours on occasion.
