What We Do

The Medical Council is the regulatory body for doctors in Ireland. The primary role of the Medical Council is to protect the public by promoting and ensuring high standards of professional conduct and professional education, training and competence among registered medical practitioners. It oversees lifelong learning and skills development throughout doctors’ professional careers. It is also the organisation through which the public may make a complaint against a doctor.

The Medical Council was established under the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978, as amended in 2007 (Medical Practitioners Act 2007). The Medical Council will be required to work in accordance with pending amending legislation, the Regulated Professions (Health and Social Care) (Amendment) Act 2020, once commenced. The Medical Council receives no state funding and is funded primarily by doctors’ registration fees.

Our functions include:

  • Promoting good medical practice
  • Investigating complaints against medical practitioners
  • Ensuring high standards of medical education and training
  • Maintaining the Register of Medical Practitioners in Ireland
  • Setting standards for the maintenance of professional competence

We operate a hybrid working model. The Medical Council offices are located at Kingram House, Kingram Place, Dublin 2.

Recruitment Process
  • Candidates will receive an acknowledgement of their application.
  • Candidates will be assessed based on the criteria specified for the role.
  • Candidates selected from the short-listing process will be invited for an interview with the Medical Council. In some instances, a second round of interviews may be necessary.
  • Due to large volumes of applications, we are unable to provide feedback to external candidates not shortlisted for interview, and we will endeavour, when requested, to give constructive and concise feedback to candidates who were unsuccessful at interview stage.
  • Any offer made will be subject to receiving two satisfactory references and a pre-employment medical assessment.
