Founded in 1592, the University is steeped in history with a reputation for excellence in education, research, and innovation, which has been inspiring generations of thinkers for over 400 years. Thrive: Trinity College Dublin's Strategic Plan 2025 - 2030 Post Summary A senior Research Fellow (Fellow) is required to manage a new 5-year research programme led by Prof Denise Fitzgerald called ‘ Harnessing the immune system to repair the brain’. The research programme will be based in Trinity College Dublin and will have a particular focus on neuroimmunology, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), regeneration and ageing. The Fellow will play a senior leadership and management role in delivering the research programme with Prof Fitzgerald. The Fellow will oversee the research programme, laboratory, team and collaborations on a day-to-day basis. This Regenerative Neuroimmunology research programme encompasses discovery, clinical and translational research including clinical trial activity and places a strong emphasis on engaged research, positive research culture and collaboration. Murine and human neuroimmune studies incorporating in vitro, ex vivo and in vivo experimental models, biobanking and clinical studies will be central to the work of the lab. The team will directly work with clinical collaborators across at least 2 hospital sites. Significant local, national and international collaboration are a central tenet of the programme and the Fellow will have a major role in maintaining and building such collaborations. The main lab will be located in Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute with additional activity at St. James’ Hospital, Trinity Translational Medicine Institute and Beaumont Hospital and we will partner with FutureNeuro, the Research Ireland Centre for Translational Brain Science. The Fitzgerald group in TCD will work closely with the Fitzgerald group in Queen’s University Belfast ( https://fitzgeraldlab.co.uk/ ) which is part of the Northern Ireland Multiple Sclerosis Research Hub ( https://msresearchni.co.uk/ ). The Fellow will play a leading role in fostering collaborative working between the PI’s two teams in Rep. of Ireland and Northern Ireland. The successful candidate will help build an ambitious, collaborative and productive team of interdisciplinary researchers. Initially, the Fellow will work with the PI to recruit the team (Research Assistants, Postdoctoral Researchers and PhD Students) and play a leading role in laboratory setup to include equipment procurement, SOP and policy development, data management infrastructure and productive engagement with partners, stakeholders and colleagues. The Fellow will also work with the PI, engagement officer and collaborators to develop and deliver the Engaged Research programme of the Award. The Fellow will oversee experimental model/protocol setup and innovation, training, project planning and monitoring, data analysis, interpretation and dissemination and co-production of research with the public, stakeholders and partners. This position is suitable for an experienced researcher who wants to progress in leadership while still being primarily based in the laboratory, in a well-resourced programme, with the possibility of either extension into a long-term, or support for transition to full research independence.
