Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Civil Engineering.
There is an ever-increasing need for actionable information to inform climate smart decision making for good management of our rivers and streams. Currently, almost half of Ireland’s freshwater bodies are failing to meet good ecological status and current pressures, including those related to hydromorphology, are predicted to be exacerbated by climate change.
The successful candidate will join an active UCD research team in the Climate+ Co-Centre, to develop new monitoring strategies and rapid response indicators to Inform the implementation of appropriate restoration measures for improving ecological water quality in our rivers and streams in line with the goals of the EU Water Framework Directive. A range of measures are being trialled in rivers across Ireland, targeting diffuse agricultural pollution and the reduction of fine sediment inputs to these freshwater systems. Monitoring the effectiveness of these measures is urgently needed to inform on the most appropriate restoration measures, and their locations, to achieve the water quality improvements being sought. Specific objectives of the role include determining the nature, level (location, spatial extent) of interventions needed for measurable improvements in river water quality; identifying the factors which influence the timeline of system recovery; identifying ecological indicators of success (including biodiversity assessment), and developing guidance to support river resource managers in implementing monitoring strategies that can best inform the deployment of restoration measures.
