UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, 25 months
Description
UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1, UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science, 25 months
Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 within UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science
A Post Doctoral researcher is required to support research activities in the field of ruminant livestock production and enteric methane emissions. The focus of this project is to develop feed and feed additive based solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions from pasture based dairy cows with the investigation of concurrent impacts on rumen physiology, rumen fermentation and the rumen microbiome. Associated impacts on animal performance, milk yield, quality and processability will also be determined. While a range of solutions have been developed internationally to address enteric methane emissions in housed systems, Ireland’s pasture based-dairy production systems necessitate bespoke solutions. Development of solutions to reduce enteric methane emissions will play a key role in Ireland meeting its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Agri sector by 25% by the year 20230.
This project will quantify the potential of a range of feed ingredients and feed additives (novel and established) to reduce daily methane output from lactating dairy cows while also quantifying their effects on a range of animal physiological and production parameters. The primary responsibilities within the role will relate to animal husbandry and handling, measurement and analysis of enteric methane emissions data and measurement of rumen fermentation variables with a concurrent role in managing pasture based lactating dairy cows at UCD Lyons farm.
