About the Role:

As a Commissioning Primary Plant Engineer, you will be responsible for testing and commissioning high and medium voltage primary plant equipment. You will work closely with the project commissioning team to make sure all equipment is fully tested, documented, and handed over before secondary systems testing begins. The role requires good coordination on site and the ability to work across different projects and regions. This role also offers the opportunity to shape and grow a dedicated primary plant commissioning team within the business.

Key Responsibilities

• Commission HV and MV primary plant equipment, including circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, surge arresters, main grid transformers, and associated equipment. Collaborate with primary plant installation teams to ensure seamless transition from installation to commissioning phases.

• Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices in primary plant testing.

• Drive the development and implementation of standardised commissioning and testing processes for primary equipment during project execution phases.

•  Work with the Regional Commissioning Managers to plan and deliver commissioning activities.

• Hand over all primary plant test reports to the wider commissioning team, ensuring work is complete before secondary commissioning starts.

• Carry out pre-commissioning checks and confirm equipment installation is complete and ready for testing.

• Support integrated testing with protection, SCADA, and secondary teams.

• Record results accurately and make sure all works meet client and utility requirements.

• Provide technical support, guidance and training to commissioning engineers and technicians.

•  Report progress, risks, and any issues clearly to the Regional Commissioning Manager.

• Always follow H&MV procedures and site safety standards.

Skills and Requirements

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience.

• 5+ years’ commissioning experience on HV/MV substations or similar projects.

• Strong knowledge of primary plant equipment and testing methods, including transformer testing.

• Confident in using primary plant test equipment and related software.

• Good understanding of industry standards and utility specifications.

• Strong communication and coordination skills.

• Experience mentoring and supporting junior engineers or technicians is desirable.

• Ability to work independently and take initiative in developing new processes and approaches.

• Flexible to travel and work on projects across different regions.

• Focused on delivering safe and high-quality work.
