Applications are invited for a temporary post of a UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellow Level 1 or 2 within UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science.
Vision loss can result in significant loss of independence. For many people, vision loss is caused by disruptions to specialized cells in the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that detects light to generate images. This leads to the broad clinical term of retinal degeneration (RD) which encompasses inherited retinal degeneration (IRD), age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR).For RD patients, there remains a need to discover and develop better treatments that are more broadly effective within multiple affected patient populations. Thus, our approach is to start with understanding biological processes commonly changed in retinal degeneration. In particular, we chose to focus on exciting new targets called “extracellular vesicles” or EVs. These are small messengers released by cells in the retina and which can send unwanted signals to other cells, thus, initiating and supporting disease. In this research, our ambition is to document the cargo contained within these cellular messages in multiple scenarios of retinal degeneration. This will include patient samples and pre-clinical research models of retinal degeneration. This broad collection of samples will allow us to use state-of-the-art approaches to profile molecules (e.g. proteins) commonly present in retinal degeneration. Their role in mediating vision loss will be validated. This will identify disease pathways but also reveal targets for future therapeutics to ameliorate vision loss.

The PD1 position is intended for early stage researchers, either just after completion of a PhD or for someone entering a new area for the first time. If you have already completed your PD1 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD1, or you are an external applicant whose total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 4 years, you should not apply and should refer to PD2 posts instead.
The PD2 post is intended for researchers that have completed PD1. As with the PD1, if you have already completed your PD2 stage in UCD or will soon complete a PD2, or your total Postdoctoral experience, inclusive of the duration of the advertised post, would exceed 6 years, you should not apply and should refer to Research Fellow posts instead.
