Applications are now invited for the position of #003500 Research Assistant in Health/Social Care, 48 months (Part-time 0.2 FTE,) 1 day per week, flexible
Role Profile
Applications are invited for the part-time research assistant position (level 1, point 2 at 0.2 WTE) to work on a Health Research Board-Health Service Executive funded study on peer-to-peer abuse and aggression in residential care for adults. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team to develop training and guidance on the prevention and management of peer-to-peer abuse in nursing homes, residential care facilities for people with intellectual disability and mental health residential care.
Adult safeguarding is concerned with ensuring individuals' autonomy and self-determination are supported and protecting adults at risk of abuse and neglect. Peer-to-peer abuse and aggression (PPAA) is defined as “offensive, aggressive, and intrusive verbal, physical, sexual, and material interactions between service users that in a community setting would likely be unwelcome and potentially cause physical or psychological distress or harm to the recipient/victim”. Despite representing the most common referral concern to the Health Service Executive, there has been no Irish research, while global studies are scant, with most focusing on nursing homes.
This study will explore how PPAA is experienced in Irish adult residential care settings and will develop prevention and early intervention guidance for PPAA in nursing homes, and residential care facilities for people with mental health difficulties and people with intellectual disabilities.
The study is a sequential mixed-method design enabling the generation of praxis-based deliverables to improve quality and patient safety related to PPAA. It is supported by a participatory action research framework that centres on working with people’s experiences towards co-designed, emancipatory change. Data collection has five stages: 1) Rapid realist review, retrospective chart review, 2) Interviews, 3) Participatory Action Research groups, 4) Expert consensus and World Cafes, and 5) Project impact and collaboration evaluation.
