About the Role

The Civil & Structural Engineering Team Lead is responsible for leading and managing an assigned team of Civil & Structural Engineers and Designers, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality engineering solutions across a portfolio of projects throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom.

The role combines technical leadership, people management, resource planning, and project oversight, ensuring that civil and structural designs are delivered safely, efficiently, and in accordance with client requirements, statutory regulations, and industry best practice.

The successful candidate will typically lead a team of up to 10 engineers and designers while overseeing multiple projects at various stages of design and construction. Working closely with Project Managers, Discipline Leads, Clients, Contractors, Utilities, and Local Authorities, the Team Lead will ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, commercially, and to the highest technical standards.

Key Responsibilities

Team & Delivery Management

  • Overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Civil & Structural Engineering Team, including workload planning, resource allocation, utilisation, and delivery performance
  • Lead and manage a team of Civil & Structural Engineers and Designers, ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget, and quality requirements
  • Assign, coordinate, and monitor design activities to ensure project milestones and client deliverables are achieved

Technical & Design Oversight

  • Oversee the delivery of civil and structural engineering design packages, including calculations, reports, specifications, drawings, design studies, technical assessments, and construction support activities
  • Actively participate in the creation and review of engineering deliverables, ensuring all necessary project inputs are obtained and coordinated in a timely manner
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to project teams, ensuring designs are compliant with client specifications, applicable regulations, codes, standards, and industry best practice
  • Ensure civil and structural design elements are delivered in accordance with project requirements, planning conditions, utility requirements, and construction methodologies
  • Review, approve, and sign off engineering deliverables prior to issue, ensuring technical accuracy, consistency, and quality across the team

Stakeholder & Project Coordination

  • Support Project Managers and Design Leads in managing project risks, programme delivery, resource requirements, commercial performance, and client expectations
  • Ensure effective collaboration with Electrical, Mechanical, BIM, Environmental, and Project Management teams to support coordinated multidisciplinary project delivery
  • Support engagement with clients, local authorities, municipalities, utility providers, statutory authorities, and regulatory bodies to facilitate planning approvals, design acceptance, and project execution
  • Manage and coordinate utility design submissions, technical reviews, design logs, stakeholder comments, and responses to technical queries
  • Review and respond to subcontractor and vendor technical submissions, ensuring compliance with project requirements and design intent
  • Undertake client-facing activities including design workshops, progress meetings, presentations, and site visits across H&MV's project portfolio as required

Team Development & Leadership

  • Support the professional development of team members through mentoring, coaching, performance management, training plans, and continuous professional development initiatives
  • Organise and chair weekly design team meetings to track progress, resolve technical issues, and maintain alignment across projects
  • Organise regular team meetings and one-to-one meetings to provide updates, gather feedback, and support individual development
  • Attend Engineering Leadership meetings and communicate key business updates, objectives, and decisions back to the team
  • Participate in Engineering Lead workshops, supporting lessons learned reviews and the sharing of best practice across the wider engineering function
  • Actively contribute to improving engineering standards, design processes, quality procedures, innovation initiatives, and continuous improvement programmes
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, collaboration, and technical excellence throughout the team

Key Requirements

Qualifications & Experience

  • Honours Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline (Level 8 or equivalent)
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in civil and structural engineering consultancy and/or technical design roles within the construction, infrastructure, energy, utility, industrial, or data centre sectors
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in a technical leadership, discipline lead, or team management role
  • Experience leading engineering teams of up to 10 staff and managing resources across multiple concurrent projects
  • Experience delivering projects within Ireland and the United Kingdom, with a strong understanding of local planning processes, construction practices, regulations, and stakeholder requirements

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of civil and structural engineering principles across a broad range of disciplines, including:
    • Reinforced concrete structures
    • Structural steel design
    • Masonry structures
    • Roads and external works
    • Drainage and SuDS design
    • Utilities coordination
    • Earthworks and geotechnics
  • Ability to interpret, review, and coordinate engineering drawings, including plans, elevations, sections, construction details, and BIM models
  • Strong understanding of applicable Eurocodes, British Standards, Irish Building Regulations, and industry best practice
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and common civil and structural design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Robot Structural Analysis, STAAD.Pro, Tekla Structural Designer, or equivalent

Stakeholder & Communication

  • Experience engaging with local authorities, planning authorities, utility providers, statutory bodies, and other external stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and interpersonal skills, with a preference for collaborative and proactive engagement
  • Strong technical report writing, presentation, and verbal communication skills
  • Experience interfacing directly with clients and managing stakeholder relationships throughout project delivery
  • Experience managing and coordinating multidisciplinary project teams delivering industrial, utility, commercial, energy, pharmaceutical, or data centre projects

Desirable

  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, critical thinking, and aptitude for innovative design and value engineering
  • Experience of temporary works design
  • Experience within the High Voltage, Substation, Renewable Energy, Data Centre, BESS, or Utility sectors
  • Chartered Engineer status (Engineers Ireland, ICE, IStructE or equivalent)

Other Requirements

  • Full clean driving licence and willingness to undertake occasional site visits
